IS THERE SUCH A THING AS TOO MUCH CARDIO?

Cardio was all the rage a decade ago but over the last few years fitness enthusiasts have realized that it’s actually NOT the best thing from a weight loss point of view.

THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF CARDIO has a number of benefits like…

  • Boosts heart and lung health
  • Improves circulation
  • Improves endurance
  • Burns fat
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Boosts creativity

And while it’s true that cardio burns more calories per time spent than any other form of exercise WHILE you’re doing it, the fat burning STOPS the moment the workout is over.

In fact, doing loads of cardio trains your body to “adapt” by becoming MORE EFFICIENT with calories. In other words, your body holds onto fat stores for your next long cardio session by SLOWING YOUR METABOLISM DOWN in a short period of time.

When you do too much cardio, the cons start outweighing the pros and this is what happens…

  • Insufficiently fueled bodies break down muscle tissue during your sessions.
  • With less muscle in your body, your resting metabolism will drop.
  • Weakens the immune system, making it easier to get sick.
  • Triggers a stress response inside your body – release of hormones
  • Cortisol – poor sleep, low libido, poor cognition.
  • Prolactin – lowers estrogen and testosterone (sex hormones)
  • Low estrogen – can cause bone loss
  • Low progesterone – anxiety, insomnia, weight gain, increased PMS symptoms & heavy, painful or irregular periods.

So does that mean cardio is off limits?

Yes and no.

Cardio will always be the go-to exercise if you’re training fitness (endurance + heart and lung health) but for fat loss and body shaping, RESISTANCE TRAINING IS KING.

Resistance training…

  • Makes you STRONG – protection against injury
  • Increases metabolism
  • Improves insulin sensitivity
  • Fights sarcopenia (muscle loss)
  • Prevents disease and brain degeneration
